Enrich Your Life Series: Even More Tips for a Healthy Mind

Physical and mental decline are two of the biggest concerns among older Americans, and just like your retirement funds, it’s important to protect your health and well-being. As you move into your new senior living apartment and prepare to enjoy your retirement in the company of your friends and family, you’re probably looking for ways to maintain your health and well-being. We gave you three tips for a healthy mind in a previous post, and in today’s post, we’ll provide you with even more tips that will help you protect your mind as you age.

Liberty Ridge Senior Living Community is proud to be Lexington’s Top Rated Local® assisted living facility. We proudly offer a range of classes and activities that enrich the lives of our members – get in touch with us today to learn more!

Tips for a Healthy Mind

Keep Learning

Keeping your mind active is one of the easiest ways to preserve your mental acuity. Working on the puzzles in the Sunday paper, reading new books, playing chess, and learning a new hobby or skill are all ways that you can keep your mind engaged. No matter what you choose to spend your time doing, any activity that creates and preserves new synaptic connections will be beneficial.

Our senior living apartments offer a number of clubs and educational workshops that add substance to our members’ lives. We offer everything from lively discussions to short courses that teach our residents valuable new skills. You can view our current event calendar here, or you can get in touch with us to learn more about upcoming opportunities.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

There’s no shortage of evidence that a good night’s sleep is vital to preserving your physical and mental health. Sleep disorders such as insomnia and sleep apnea have both been shown to be incredibly detrimental to both memory and cognitive functioning more generally, so make an effort to treat any sleep problems you’re experiencing as soon as possible. Your doctor may recommend that you find ways to reduce your stress, as high levels of anxiety and stress are known to disrupt sleep quality.

Review Your Medications

No matter your age, it’s always important to visit your doctor for an annual or biannual medication review. You may have been prescribed a medication to help you manage pain, blood pressure, or heartburn, and many adults stay on these medications for longer than necessary. Some drugs, including painkillers and medications used to treat anxiety, depression, and other disorders can sometimes affect your ability to think clearly. Moreover, drugs that induce a feeling of drowsiness or sedation can greatly increase your risk of falling, so make sure that any medications you’re taking are necessary for your health and well-being.

We hope that this post will help you maintain a healthy mind as you grow older.
